Introducing our Rangatahi rōpu who will be exercising their kaitiakitanga during 2020/21.
At the end of last year, we put the karanga out to our membership and wider iwi for expressions of interest in joining our Rangatahi Program, aimed at 17 to 25 year olds who are interested in learning about matauranga māori, the environment and conservation.
Thank's to our Treaty Partners like Te Papa Atawhai Department of Conservation we were able to build a wonderful program and learning experience for our rangatahi.
Two of our Rangatahi spent most of the summer school holidays on Te Kawau Tumaro-ō-Toi in the "Rangers Hut" where they learned about track maintenance, pest control, water safety around the wharf, and how to look after the chattels in Mansion House.
"I had no idea that so much work went on behind the scenes at Kawau island"
Two of our "mainland" rangatahi spent most of the summer patrolling the marine reserves and public spaces throughout the rohe ō Ngāti Manuhiri. They collected rubbish left on the beaches, alerted MPI to those breaching the fishing restrictions and shadowed the Marine Rangers from Te Papa Atawhai.
