HE RĀHUI – 16 MARCH 2020

It is with great sadness that Ngāti Manuhiri acknowledge the recent death in Whangateau Harbour.

With the support of DOC and NZ Police a rāhui has been placed on the area for three days from today – Monday 16 March 2020 and will be lifted at sunrise on Thursday 19 March 2020.

A rāhui (physical and spiritual protection mechanism) sets a temporary prohibition around the rāhui area of Whangateau, Point Wells and Tī Point in order to acknowledge the death and to express our sympathy to the whānau of the deceased.

It provides time for tapu (sacredness) to dissipate following the death allowing time for healing and recovery of the natural elements at place as well as people; in particular the grieving whānau.

To show respect all fisherman and shellfish gatherers in the area are asked to consider using alternative areas during the rāhui.
